چکیده

The sensitivity of a possible future 1 Megaton water Cherenkov detector for proton decay searches was studied. For p e π0 decay mode, the detection efficiency and the number of atmospheric neutrino backgrounds were estimated by using a detailed Monte Carlo simulation program. Moreover, their dependence on the number density of the photomultiplier tube (PMT) was investigated. With the PMT density of the Super-Kamiokande detector (2 PMT/m2, 40% photocathode coverage), we will reach to 1 5 1035 years partial lifetime limit at 90% confidence level by 10 years livetime of the detector (104 kton year exposure). With a 1/4 (1/9) PMT density, the sensitivity for p e π0 mode is decreased to 1 1035 years (7 1034 years).

1 Multi - Megaton Water Cherenkov Detector for a Proton Decay

The discovery of the neutrino oscillations in 1998 revisited the interest of proton decay search [2]. The existence of the tiny neutrino mass indicates the existence of the large energy scale behind and suggests the connection between the small neutrino mass and proton decay. There are strong indications of the unification scale of O(10 16)GeV: the running coupling constants with super-symmetri...

The physics impact of proton track identification in future megaton-scale water Cherenkov detectors

In this paper, we investigate the impact in future megaton-scale water Cherenkov detectors of identifying proton Cherenkov rings. We estimate the expected event rates for detected neutral current and charged current quasi-elastic neutrino interactions from atmospheric neutrinos in a megaton-scale Super-Kamiokande-like detector with both 40% and 20% photo-cathode coverage. With this sample we ex...

International Scoping Study ( ISS ) for a future neutrino factory and Super - Beam facility . Detectors and flux instrumentation for future neutrino facilities

This report summarises the conclusions from the detector group of the International Scoping Study of a future Neutrino Factory and Super-Beam neutrino facility. The baseline detector options for each possible neutrino beam are defined as follows: 1. A very massive (Megaton) water Cherenkov detector is the baseline option for a sub-GeV Beta Beam and Super Beam facility. 2. There are a number of ...

Supernova pointing with low- and high-energy neutrino detectors

A future galactic SN can be located several hours before the optical explosion through the MeV-neutrino burst, exploiting the directionality of n-e scattering in a water Cherenkov detector such as Super-Kamiokande. We study the statistical efficiency of different methods for extracting the SN direction and identify a simple approach that is nearly optimal, yet independent of the exact SN neutri...

Oscillations of very low energy atmospheric neutrinos

There are several new features in production, oscillations and detection of the atmospheric neutrinos of low energies, E < ∼ 100 MeV. The flavor ratio, r, of muon to electron neutrino fluxes is substantially smaller than 2 and decreases with energy, significant part of events is due to the decay of invisible muons at rest, etc. Oscillations in two-layer medium (atmosphere earth) should be taken...
